Spoiler! You probably have half of them in your kitchen already!
I’ll admit, I love a fancy kitchen gadget as much as the next person, but the truth is you don’t need anything too fancy to turn your kitchen into a bakery. In fact, my list of must-haves, which could be much longer🙃, likely includes items you already have in your kitchen!
Great 8:
- Stand Mixer
- Kitchen Scale
- Thermometer
- 2-qt Stainless Steel Pot
- Nesting Mixing Bowls
- Rubber Spatula
- Rolling Pin
- Whisk
A stand mixer is an investment you will not regret! You want a nice heavy one, with the standard whisk, paddle, & dough hook attachments. Ideally one that can handle mixing everything from meringues to bread dough without walking off the counter. (My first stand mixer did this. Twice!) I am currently using a 5-qt Cuisinart and I absolutely love it.
Do not to be intimidated by the kitchen scale and thermometer! Measuring ingredients by weight is the only way to ensure accurate, beautifully consistent baked goods. This is chemistry we’re doing here! I use this one.
The thermometer will come into play primarily when cooking sugar. (Which we’ll dig into the details of later!) I received this thermometer while attending culinary school and it is still my favorite. It can be used for everything you cook in your kitchen, just keep it clean!
A good stainless steel pot will outlive you. I have and recommend this entire set, but for the purposes of baking any single 2-qt pot with a snug lid will serve countless purposes.
I have had this specific set of mixing bowls for almost 8 years now. We’ve been through a lot and I can’t thank them, or recommend them, enough. Many recipes require combining and mixing ingredients in different ways and having a variety of bowls makes it easy.
Lastly are those utensils I keep on my utility belt. ANY rubber spatula, rolling pin, and whisk will do. Some of my favorites are from Hobby Lobby.
Alright chefs, gather the Great 8 and meet me in the kitchen for our first recipe!
